The following is a list of web sites that contain some valuable gis data sets.    Please note that most "free" data, quickly becomes a liability when it is not in the appropriate format or coordinate system.   Another problem that may arise in using public domain sources is that the data may not behave in the manner that you expect.    Petroleum GeoGraphics works with many of these data sets on a regular basis, and would be happy to help you on any  issues or problems that you may face.    Some common mapping applications that Petroleum GeoGraphics supports include ESRI ArcInfo/ArcView®, AutoCad®, GeoGraphix®, Petra®, & MapInfo®.
